The 2019 publication of Providence’s Climate Justice Plan represented a paradigm shift in the local practice of climate action and urban planning. In 2026, CIVIC is supporting the City of Providence Sustainability Department, in partnership with the Racial and Environmental Justice Coalition, to update the Plan and create a tool to understand our progress in order to ensure Providence’s framework for climate action is rooted in our frontline community’s current priorities and to hold elected officials accountable. CIVIC’s role includes developing an equitable engagement strategy, supporting engagement implementation, and collaborating with energy and resilience consultants to ensure the work undertaken is done with a lens toward a co-governance process and equitable outcomes.
